School's not in session, but with only a couple of weeks left before la rentrée is upon us, it's time to start getting your brain back into shape.
If you have any interest in Paris, you ought to know a little something about Walter Benjamin. Read about his pot habit in this week's New Yorker.
What does "Glandridi glassala tuffm Izimbrabim/ Blassa galassasa tuffm Izimbrabim" mean? Find out if it really matters in this piece on Dada in the New York Review of Books
"I, for one, am not prepared to believe that Ann Coulter is made in God's image without seeing some proof." Me either. Jerry Coyne recenters the debate on Coulter's latest "book."
Tired of reading? Watch the late great Michel Foucault lay out his entire philosophy to the impossibly irritating Noam Chomsky on You Tube:
It's about 8 minutes long. You're allowed to go to the bathroom when Chomsky speaks.

Chère Maîtresse,
Could you kindly paste a warning notice on your blog when you've mentioned Ann Coulter in a post? I had the misfortune of stumbling upon her/it here way too early this morning. Merci de votre compréhension.
Merci Maîtresse, for the TROPE-icalia of good links :) Good METRO/Underground/MTA reading on the way to work..
Wow! Who knew you could find Michel Foucault on You Tube along with all those karaoke-singing Korean schoolkids?
Bonjour Lauren,
Pierre

Um, Noam Chomsky is the man. He is the most intelligent person out there. And unlike most of his counterparts everytime he speaks he actually has something to say. He almost inspired me to switch to linguistics when i was in university (i was studying engineering). A true intellectual if there ever was one.
yes, Chomssky has been acclaimed worldwide as one of the most influential linguists in history.
I have to say, I find Chomsky's politics and the field of linguistics equally insupportable... but that's just me.
Mais, qu'est-ce que tu dis?? Chomsky ALWAYS uses reasonable arguments when discussing the israeli occupation and the plight of the palestinians.
As far as his linguistics work, to be honest, i know little of.
And that is too bad. Chomsky is a linguist first. His political activism is unsignificant compared to his academic works.
in-significant. and yes he's important as a linguist but has been more interested in provocative activism for a long time now (I refer you to just about any article written on him in the last 10 years).
